Investigating teachers’ perception about the educational benefits of Web2.0 personal learning environments

Implementing personal learning environments (PLEs) in educational settings is a challenging and complex process. Teachers as the main agents of change in their classroom settings need support in designing and implementing these new learning environments and integrating them into the educational process.

In this paper, we propose a model to implement Web 2.0 PLEs in educational settings based on the conceived objectives of PLEs, namely (i) enhancing the students’ control in educational process and (ii) supporting and empowering students to build and deploy their PLEs.
In addition, we develop a technological prototype based on the model, and report and analyze the perceptions of a group of teachers regarding the potential of the prototype to improve the educational process. The results suggest that the implementation of the model can contribute to the development of a student-centric learning environment and improvement in the teachers’ technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (TPACK).
