The Museum of New Zealand has joined the likes of the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in offering high-resolution images of its artwork for free online.

The museum, also called Te Papa Tongarewa, recently announced that it had updated its website to make it easier for users to download high-resolution images either under open licenses or in the public domain. Over 14 000 images are under a CC BY-NC-ND license, which means that they can be used and shared as long as they are attributed to the original author. The images also cannot be modified or used for commercial purposes.

Another 17 000 images are in the public domain, which means that there are no known copyright restrictions. These pictures can be changed and exchagned freely (although it's good practice to attribute them anyway), even for commercial purposes.
