ECLIL approach in a first grade and primary school network (Start up CLIL)

Since the CLIL methodology was introduced in Italian high schools in 2014 there have been several debates and reflections on the topic.

Why is the CLIL method so requested and so valuable in learning and teaching foreign languages, and why has it been introduced so late in Italian school system?

The debate considers and focuses on student’s foreign language skills and the level necessary to be able to learn extra contents in foreign language. If we consider the language a means and not a subject the link between CLIL and foreign language teaching is so slight that the two subjects are the natural evolution of the other. So CLIL is used to teach and learn foreign languages since pre- schools.

This project took place during the 2015/2016 school year. A network of 6 schools trialled a CLIL approach with students in their last year of primary school and class of low secondary school.
